Nanking University was started in the home of its first president, John C. Ferguson in 1888. After the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95, Nanking University had to rent another house in order to take care of its growing enrollment. In 1906, the upper classes of the Presbyterian Academy and Nanking Christian College joined to form Union Christian College. In 1910, Union Christian College and Nanking University merged to become the University of Nanking. When the China medical Board took over Peking Union Medical College in 1915, the medical department of the University of Nanking, along with several other schools, decided to transfer its work to Tsinan. In 1925, the University had an enrollment of 461 students.
The university was a pioneer in vocational education. The University of Nanking had an exchange program with the School of Agriculture of Cornell University whereby they secured specialists who helped initiate research projects. In 1919, for the first time, the university required formal, written examinations for entrance. Among other institutions, the University of Nanking had made courses on Christianity and the Bible elective by 1925. By 1929, it had completed the registration process of the school. In the agriculture realm, the work of the school was astonishing and for a few years it served as the registration center of new hybrids of small grains and operated the National Bureau of Agricultural Research for the government. In 1937, in the wake of the Japanese push into China, the school had relocated around West China Union University in Chengtu.
The University of Nanking was one of the pioneers in the demonstration effect of modern agricultural research and training and its impact on economic growth.
